The 2nd Development Division[1] (第2事業部)[2], is a development division of Sega. It is the home of Sonic Team and and is most notable for developing Sega's flagship IP Sonic the Hedgehog. It is also tasked with rebooting of several older, fan-favourite IPs such as Samba de Amigo to achieve Sonic-like success.[1] This extends to the "Power the Next Level" games based on Golden Axe, Shinobi and Streets of Rage.[3]
Alongside its consumer-focused second department, the division also houses a first department dedicated to the development of a number of arcade games from the former Sega Interactive R&D1 and Sega Interactive R&D3, most prominently Eiketsu Taisen,[4] Initial D The Arcade,[5] Maimai DX and Chunithm.[6] Personnel from these titles have additionally provided development support and occupied certain roles on second department titles.
