Viva! Skydiving (ビバ! スカイダイビング)[2] was a large attraction located at Tokyo Joypolis.
History
Closure
On April 18th, 2005, a visitor died while riding Viva! Skydiving. While the original operations guide for the ride instructed all visititors to wear a seatbelt, exceptions had begun to be made for overweight guests who were too big to be strapped in. In this case, permission was granted for a rider to not use their seatbelt; and shortly after starting, the ride tipped forward, causing the passenger to fall five metres to the floor.
In response, Sega closed Viva! Skydiving, and investigations uncovered a culture of relaxed safety practises across several of Toyko Joypolis' attractions. Viva! Skydiving would be subsequently removed in the months that followed (with no falling tower-style ride ever seen in Joypolis park again), with other attractions also being retired on safety grounds.
To date this is the only known death to occur within a Sega-owned attraction of any kind.
