The Fifth Research & Development Department (第五研究開発部) was the shortlived fifth department of Sega Interactive.[1][2][3] Little is known about its existence, however it appears to have been formed around February 2019 at the same time as Interactive's move to the Sumitomo Fudosan Osaki Garden Tower offices that also created Sega Interactive R&D4 and R&D6. Akin to R&D4 and 6 being former departments of Sega Interactive R&D1, it was previously most likely the former second development department of Sega Interactive R&D2, that had been focused on creating games for consumer platforms.[4]
During its known period of existence, the department would have continued work on its existing consumer platform releases (e.g. the PlayStation 4 version of Border Break[3]) and also started development on other titles. These may have included new examples for smartphones,[1] and arcades with famous IP.[2]
It became a department under the fifth division of the Sega Corporation in 2020, following the merger of Sega Interactive into the former Sega Games.
