Eternal Champions (エターナルチャンピオンズ) is a 2D fighting game developed for the Sega Mega Drive by Sega Interactive and released in 1993. The game was created by Sega of America to capitalize on the massive success of Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat.

Story

An omniscient being known as the Eternal Champion predicts that mankind will soon fade from existence due to the untimely and unjust deaths of key individuals throughout history who were destined for greatness. Seeking to restore balance to the world, the Eternal Champion gathers these souls from time moments before their deaths. The Eternal Champion only has enough power to restore life to one of these individuals, so he organizes and holds a fighting tournament between them, where the victor will be able to regain their life and change their fate while bringing balance to the universe, whilst the losers will be forced to die just as history recorded.

Gameplay

Much like its highly influential peers, Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat, Eternal Champions is a 2D one-on-one fighting game in which players fight as one of a variety of different characters, in this case dragged from different periods of time to do battle. The player fights their way through a contest, hoping to face the Eternal Champion and return to their normal life. Players compete in best-of-three-round matches with time limits. Like Mortal Kombat, there is a high level of violence.

Characters move with Left and Right, crouch with Down, and jump with Up. Like the Street Fighter games, there are three punches and three kicks that vary based upon speed and power. The punches are X (straight), Y (lunge), and Z (swing). The kicks are A (snap), B (thrust), and C (wheel). The weakest punches and kicks are fast but do minimal damage, medium attacks are a balanced mix of recovery speed and damage, and strong attacks are the most powerful but recover the slowest. Attacks can be blocked by pressing away (for high attacks) or down and away (for low attacks). Grapples are executed by standing close to an opponent and pressing Left or Right and using either the medium or the strong punch button. These attacks cannot be blocked or escaped. If a character is hit several times in a row they become "dizzy" and their opponent can land a free attack.

When playing with a standard three-button control pad,  START  toggles between punches and kicks and  START +A+B+C pauses the game. The game also supports the Activator (and it was packaged with the device in North America). The instruction manual has a list of moves for the device.

Each character has their own unique special attacks that are performed with special button combinations. All special moves are performed by either pressing multiple buttons together or holding a direction to charge and then pressing the opposite direction together with an attack button. There are no rolling motions in this game, and a given special move may only be performed with a specific button (rather than with any punch or any kick button). Every special move costs an amount of Inner Strength, depicted by a Yin/Yang symbol next to the character's health bar at the top of the screen during a fight. Characters cannot perform special moves if they do not have sufficient Inner Strength remaining, but it replenishes over time. Different special attacks decrease the meter by different amounts, and the characters each have a taunt move that decreases their opponent's special attack meter as well. In the single-player mode, the computer opponent can do special moves even after its meter has reached zero.

The game introduces stage-specific finishing moves called Overkills. These are performed by defeating an opponent such that they fall upon a certain area of ground. If they land in the right spot, the life bars disappear and some element of the background kills them.

Modes

There are multiple game modes:

  • Contest: The main single-player mode. The player chooses a character and fights eight computer-controlled opponents before facing the Eternal Champion. If the player loses a match in this mode, the player must not only fight the opponent again but also the previous opponent.
  • Fight: One player fights a computer-controlled opponent or two players fight each other in a single match. Players are provided with numerous options, including the amount of time for each round, the number of rounds, the game speed, and handicaps for each player.
  • Battle Room: A one-on-one battle, again playable by one or two players, in a special room with various hazards that can be enabled, such as grenades, mines, or special weapons that switch the positions of the fighters or steal health from one fighter to give to another.
  • Training: A single-player mode where the player can play three practice mini-games: Dexterity Spheres, where the player hits as many flying spheres as possible before being knocked out; Holo-Trainer, where the player tries to score as many points against a holographic opponent as possible (with different attacks having different point values); and Practice Sphere, where the player attacks a large sphere to practice targeting opponents in certain zones (such as head-, mid-, or foot-range).
  • Tournament: Contains a Round-a-Bout tournament where two players choose nine fighters and try to eliminate all of their opponent's fighters, a Single Elimination tournament where three to 32 players compete in a tournament bracket where each player is eliminated after a single loss, and a Double Elimination tournament where three to 16 players compete in a tournament bracket where each player is eliminated after two losses.

A member of Russian aristocracy from 1899 AD. She was working undercover as a circus acrobat at the time of her death. A boxer revolutionary tampered with her tightrope equipment ahead of a major show in China. She fell to her death in front of the live crowd. When her true identity was revealed, it heightened tensions between both nations.

Jetta Maxx initially started life off as a male clown character. According to Michael Latham, this character's special move ideas were recycled for the Senator secret character in Eternal Champions: Challenge From the Dark Side.

A vampire-like mutant hiding in Vietnam. In his former life, he was a noted British biochemist. He was hired by U.S. forces to spike water supplies during the Vietnam War in 1967. He became exposed to the chemical, and was mutated like every other victim. He was killed by a vampire hunter hired by the government before he could create a cure.

A former cat-burglar from 1920s Chicago. He used to do jobs for a local crime boss. He was hired to plant evidence in the hospital room of a rival mafia leader. It was only when he got to the location that he discovered that his real target was the Chief of Police, and the "evidence" was actually a bomb. Larcen was killed in the explosion that destroyed most of the hospital.

Eternal Champion
The mysterious host of the tournament. The final boss of the game. He has infinite Inner Strength. The match against him consists of a single round, but he has five different forms that must be defeated. The player gets some health restored after each form. If the player is defeated by the Eternal Champion, the game ends and cannot be continued.

History

Legacy

Sega of America took great pride in Eternal Champions, with the game selling very well in Western territories and being re-released under the Mega Hit Series, Classic Mega Drive, and Sega Platinum Collection ranges, amongst much spin-off merchandise. However, the game was never fully adopted by Sega of Japan, who preferred to concentrate efforts on the Virtua Fighter series (and later products such as Fighting Vipers and Last Bronx). As such, Eternal Champions was sidelined after Sega's US operations were downsized during the late-1990s and is unlikely to make a return in the foreseeable future.

Nevertheless, Eternal Champions was followed by the Sega Mega-CD title Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side, released in 1995 and saw two spin-off games, Chicago Syndicate and X-Perts. A second sequel, Eternal Champions: The Final Chapter, entered production, but work was halted by Sega's Japanese arm.

Eternal Champions has since been re-released on the Wii's Virtual Console service.

Comic adaptation

Sonic the Comic included few "Eternal Champions" comics strips, where the champions work together as a team. The story arcs are: "Eternal Champions" (issue #19 to issue #24) and "Larson's Revenge" (#37 to #40). Furthermore, Sonic the Comic had a special issue Eternal Champions Special, that is fully dedicated to the game, containing three "Eternal Champions" stories: "Death Isn't Forever", "Reality Check" and "Brains & Brawls".
