OutRun 2 is an arcade racing game developed by Sega for Sega Chihiro hardware in 2003. It is a direct sequel to the original 1986 game OutRun, though is actually the seventh game in the series after Battle OutRun, Turbo OutRun, OutRun Europa, OutRunners and OutRun 2019.
The format is similar to the original OutRun but features more cars, more tracks and more music. As well as this, the graphics and sound have been completely re-worked and the game's engine has been replaced with one of a more modern standard. There are also more single player (and multiplayer) modes. It is also the first OutRun game with the permission to use real cars - though past games had used a car that looked similar to the Ferrari Testarossa, no licensing deal with Ferrari had been made. In OutRun 2 however, everything is perfectly legal.
A port was made to the Xbox in 2004, which, among other things, adds a course based on tracks in the Sega Model 3 game Scud Race, as well as one based on tracks from Daytona USA 2: Power Edition.
An arcade update to OutRun 2 was released in 2004, titled OutRun 2 SP. The upgrade contains all features from OutRun 2, as well as a new 15-course branching path based on North America, additional music and extra features. This version was the basis for the home console release OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast.
