Early life
Yukifumi Makino was became invested in music in elementary school when he purchased his first album, the soundtrack to the film Jaws. His interest in other aspects of sound have been traced back to film Fist of Fury, where Makino memorized all of its lines of dialogue. His earliest pop music obsessions were Finger 5, The Carpenters and The Beatles.[6]
In junior high school, Makino could not afford to splurge on albums, so used other methods to consume music, such as listening to FM radio and collecting cassettes. He purchased several singles such as Hotel California, Deep Purple in Rock and Burn. With some of these singles he was disappointed by the songs fading out in the middle of the songs.[6]
Makino started a band in high school in which he played drums. The aesthetics for the band were inspired by his love of hard rock, but since authentic black leather pants were too expensive, he substituted them with fake vinyl pants. He listened to a wide variety of music in this period which expanded his specialities, and it was the era when disco was most popular.[6]
He joined a light music club in university, but was overwhelmed by their high level for music, leading to him maturing and his taste in music changing drastically. He also gradually stopped attending school and had to repeat a year. In his repeat year he began working part-time as a band member for a live music venue, and fell into a routine of Band -> Bar -> Sleep through dawn -> Wake up in the evening -> Band, repeat.[6]
Career
Yukifumi Makino joined Sega in 1989 and was assigned to the Human Resources Dept., where he was tasked with recruiting new employees. He was responsible for accepting many developers into the company, including Naofumi Hataya and Tetsuya Mizuguchi[6] His contact with company's development team later motivated him to transfer to the sound department[2] in 1990.[7] Under the name Macky, he first contributed to 1991 Mega Drive titles Advanced Daisenryaku: Deutsch Dengeki Sakusen Sonic the Hedgehog, as well as the less well-known Game Gear title Crystal Warriors.
Continuing to work in the Sega CS sound section (such as co-scoring Seima Densetsu 3x3 Eyes with Kaoru Wada and Yoshiaki Kashima), 1993 also saw Makino became involved with overseas recording for CD audio, beginning with Formula One World Championship: Beyond the Limit. The Beat On Beat recording studio, located in New York City, would later also be where major songs for NiGHTS into Dreams, Burning Rangers and the Sonic Adventure duology would be recorded, all of which Makino produced or coordinated.
In either late 1994 or early 1995, the CS sound section's manager Tokuhiko Uwabo was relocated elsewhere within Sega, so Yukifumi Makino took over his role, now being credited as producer on various soundtrack releases starting with Panzer Dragoon Original Sound Track. He retained this department manager role when CS sound was merged with Sega Digital Media.[2]
Sega Digital Media gradually expanded beyond just audio production and into game production in 1997, with Makino producing the games Sakura Taisen Jouki Radio Show, Shinseiki Evangelion: Digital Card Library and Roommania 203.
President and CEO
Following a major corporate shift in 2000, Sega Digital Media became a subsidiary company named Wave Master, with Yukifumi Makino as President and CEO.[6][7] He carried out this role until 2004 when his position went to Fumitaka Shibata, with Makino typically being credited for "Specially Coordinating" Wave Master Entertainment's albums instead of being an "Executive Producer".
In 2005 Makino left Wave Master to become the President and CEO of Delfi Sound (formerly Marvelous Studio)[8][9], leading to Makino to also become heavily involved anime. This rarely brings him back into contact with Sega, but in the 2010's he was often credited as a recording coordinator on various Sonic/Mario & Sonic games which featured the work of Delfi Sound composer & arranger Yutaka Minobe.
