+ | Taking place in a world that is inhabited by multiple small kingdoms, Phantasy Star III starts with a myth of a massive battle between the followers of Orakio, called Orakians, who preach technological advancements, and the followers of Laya, called Layans, who are talented with magic. After the war's abrupt end, both sides retreat to their respective regions, but animosities between the two races remain. | ||
− | Centuries later Rhys, prince of the small kingdom of Landen discovers | + | Centuries later, Rhys, prince of the small kingdom of Landen, discovers an unconscious, amnesiac young woman named Maia on a beach and nurses her back to health. The two eventually fall in love and decide to marry. However, during the wedding ceremony, Maia is kidnapped by a dragon. Filled with anger, Rhys decides to rescue Maia on his own, making allies and enemies along the way. Little does he know that he will start a decades-long struggle to save the planet from a catastrophic fate. |
− | + | Unlike the other games, the story does not take place in the Algo star system. Over the course of the game, it is revealed that the world that the characters inhabit is not actually a planet but rather a massive space ship built to save the inhabitants of the planet Palm (which was destroyed during the events of Phantasy Star II) and that both factions are the descendants of those survivors. After three generations, both factions mix, and their descendants discover that all the conflicts among the different kingdoms were caused by the Dark Force, the main antagonist of the previous games, which is defeated in a final decisive battle that takes place 1,000 years after the events of Phantasy Star IV. | |

+ | Phantasy Star III is a role-playing game. It was revolutionary at the time as, unlike the other Phantasy Star games, it featured multiple endings and twisting gameplay paths due to its focus on three generations of heroes. Over the course of the game, the player eventually controls the children and grandchildren of the first generation of heroes. At the end of each generation, the main character is given the option of marrying one of two women he has encountered during his travels. This choice determines the new main character of the next generation, the child of the previous lead. The choice also affects the gameplay, as the main character may be Orakian or a mix of Layan and Orakian, which differ in their ability to use techniques and their level of proficiency with them. Two paths in the second generation in turn lead to four paths in the third and final generation, and depending on which of the four main characters is played, the ending will vary. Across all three generations, the player travels through seven lands (Landen, Aquatica, Aridia, Draconia, Elysium, Frigidia, and Terminus) and two satellites (Dahlia and Azura), battling creatures and uncovering the truth about the world of the characters and the conflict they are embroiled in. | ||
+ | |||
+ | The main character leads a party of up to five characters. Other characters join and leave the party as the story progresses. Each character has his or her own limited inventory of items and equips his or her own weapons and armor pieces. Characters can equip separate one-handed weapons or shields in each hand or a single two-handed weapon. Different characters can use different equipment and learn different techniques. | ||
+ | |||
+ | The characters explore an overworld containing towns and dungeons using an overhead perspective. The seven biospheres of the world are arranged in a hexagonal formation connected by a series of passageways, each of which is sealed and can only be opened if the main character is in possession of a particular jewel. Dungeons include these passageways, which must be traversed to move to a different land, and also caves and other areas that must be explored to find characters, collect items, or complete other objectives in order to progress the plot. Both dungeons and the overworld have random enemy encounters as the party moves through them. Dungeons additionally have treasure chests for finding items. | ||
+ | |||
+ | Battles are turn-based and use a first-person perspective (similar to the original Phantasy Star). Enemy forces are divided into four groups. The back row contains larger enemies that cannot be targeted, except by long-ranged weapons, until the smaller enemies in the front row have been eliminated. Enemies are also divided into two columns; some weapons and techniques attack all enemies in a column. The turn order for combatants is determined by each character's speed rating. If the party is ambushed, the enemy forces take their turns first. The game uses an icon-based menu system for battles. On each turn, the player can choose to issue individual commands to each character, to allow the computer to play the turn for the player, or to allow the computer to play the entire battle (unless interrupted by pressing B). The party can also attempt to run from the encounter, but this is not always successful. When issuing commands, the player can choose to order a character to attack, use a technique (a special ability that costs technique points to use), use an item, or defend. Defending reduces the damage taken by the character but forfeits the ability to perform an action for that turn. Enemies can be targeted individually when giving orders. Attacks always hit; there are no misses or critical hits. Characters and enemies are defeated when they run out of hit points. When the enemies are defeated, the party earns meseta, the in-game currency, and surviving party members gain experience. | ||
− | + | As the characters gain experience points, they increase in level, gaining access to new techniques and raising their statistics: | |
− | + | ||
+ | *HP: The character's hit points, which is the amount of damage the character can take in combat before being defeated. | ||
+ | *TP: The character's technique points, which is used for performing techniques. | ||
+ | *Speed: The character's turn priority in the battle order. | ||
+ | *Damage: Determines the damage done by physical attacks. | ||
+ | *Defense: Reduces the damage taken from enemy attacks. | ||
+ | *Intel: Determines the character's technique points. | ||
+ | *Stamina: Determines the character's hit points. | ||
+ | *Luck: Unknown effect. | ||
+ | *Skill: Unknown effect. | ||
+ | |||
+ | Enemy attacks can sometimes inflict a poison status effect on characters, which prevents them from being healed until the ailment is removed by an item or a technique (but otherwise has no ill effects). | ||
+ | |||
+ | Towns are safe zones without any random encounters that contain NPCs that provide the characters with hints on how to proceed. Towns include weapon, armor, and item shops and buildings where party members can rest to heal and save the game, where fallen allies can be revived, and where techniques can be rebalanced. The game ends if the entire party is defeated in battle and must be restarted from a previous save. | ||
+ | |||
+ | When out of battle, the player can invoke a menu with C to view the status of any character, change the party order (members placed at the front of the party are more likely to be attacked), manage items, and use out-of-combat techniques (including healing and teleportation techniques). | ||
− | ==Characters== | + | ===Characters=== |
− | + | The player's party can consist of as many as five characters. There are three types of party members: Orakains, Layans, and cyborgs. Orakains have high physical strength and can equip a variety of weapons, but they do not learn any techniques. Layans are not as strong and are limited in which weapons they can use, but they are adept at various techniques. Cyborgs (called androids in Phantasy Star IV) can only use one type of weapon. The two cyborgs Mieu and Wren appear in every scenario as companions to the main characters. | |

+ | The game has a unique technique system in which techniques are divided into four categories (Melee, Heal, Order, and Time) containing four techniques apiece. Characters can be knowledgeable in up to three categories of techniques and immediately have access to all of the techniques for those categories. The player can visit a Technique Shop in a town to redistribute the power of those techniques: the player chooses a character and a category, and the four techniques for that category appear as a square surrounding a cursor. Moving the cursor increases the priority for a particular technique, reducing its TP cost and increasing its efficacy, at the cost of weakening another technique (or multiple techniques if the player moves the cursor on both axes). Gaining levels also increases the effectiveness of techniques. | ||

+ | ==Music and sound== | ||
+ | The music for the game was composed by Izuho Numata (who would also compose Phantasy Star IV). It was her first time writing an original score for an RPG, having previously ported Ys: Ancient Ys Vanished Omen. | ||
+ | |||
+ | The main theme, its opening rendition also called "Aratanaru tabi e" (新たなる旅へ), was adapted by the S.S.T.Band as a rock ballad for live performances, and also featured on the album Hyper Drive. In his series teaching Mega Drive Fan readers about various aspects of video game music creators, Tohru "Master" Nakabayashi used the opening theme and its S.S.T.Band arrangement as an example of the differences between writing sheet music for Mega Drive music and band music.mdfan | ||

+ | | ||
+ | |||
+ | The encounter music is dynamic and shifts depending on the course of the battle: triumphant when the player's party has the advantage, sinister when the enemy side is winning or when the party is ambushed, and neutral when the forces are balanced. | ||
+ | |||
+ | The overworld theme adds an instrument each time a new member joins the party. It is initially solemn in tone at the beginning of the journey when the main character is alone but gains a countermelody and eventually a steadfast drumbeat as he is joined by his allies. The first two variants are only heard in the first generation since the main characters in subsequent scenarios are always accompanied by Mieu and Wren. It was originally intended that the theme would change entirely depending on who was in the party, but the idea was altered because of memory constraints. | ||
+ | |||
+ | | ||

+ | The game was developed by a different team from Phantasy Star and Phantasy Star II since many members of the original team were working on the Mega Drive port of Sorcerian. Instead, many of its developers had previously worked on arcade-to-Mega Drive ports, such as Super Hang-On and Golden Axe. As such, it features a drastically different art style from the other games in the series. | ||
+ | |||
+ | Due to the crowded market for role-playing games at the time, the game features an ambitious branching narrative with multiple gameplay paths to set it apart. However, because of data storage limitations and time constraints, the final segments of the game vary relatively little, and the detail of the game's environments are sparse and the dialogue is minimal compared to the other entries in the series. | ||

It was released on Phantasy Star Collection for the Game Boy Advance in 2002, which rearranges the menus to fit the Game Boy Advance's screen. It was included in Sega Mega Drive Collection for the 2 and Portable in 2006. It was included in Phantasy Star Complete Collection for the 2 in 2008. This version adds graphical options as well as gameplay options to increase the walking speed or increase the amount of experience and meseta awarded from battles to reduce grinding. The game was included in Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection for the Xbox 360 and 3 in 2008, which includes an unlockable interview with producer Kazunari Tsukamoto. It was released for the Wii's Virtual Console in 2008. It was released for the 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Steam as part of the Sega Mega Drive Classics collection in 2018. It was added to Phantasy Star Classics for Android and iOS in 2019. | |

Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom, known as Toki no Keishousha: Phantasy Star III (時の継承者 ファンタシースターIII) in Japan, is a 1990 RPG developed and published by Sega for the Sega Mega Drive.
Like its predecessor, only Japanese, English, and Portuguese translations were produced officially.

Story
Taking place in a world that is inhabited by multiple small kingdoms, Phantasy Star III starts with a myth of a massive battle between the followers of Orakio, called Orakians, who preach technological advancements, and the followers of Laya, called Layans, who are talented with magic. After the war's abrupt end, both sides retreat to their respective regions, but animosities between the two races remain.
Centuries later, Rhys, prince of the small kingdom of Landen, discovers an unconscious, amnesiac young woman named Maia on a beach and nurses her back to health.
Unlike the other games, the story does not take place in the Algo star system.
Gameplay
Phantasy Star III is a role-playing game.
The main character leads a party of up to five characters.
The characters explore an overworld containing towns and dungeons using an overhead perspective.
Battles are turn-based and use a first-person perspective (similar to the original Phantasy Star). On each turn, the player can choose to issue individual commands to each character, to allow the computer to play the turn for the player, or to allow the computer to play the entire battle (unless interrupted by pressing ).
As the characters gain experience points, they increase in level, gaining access to new techniques and raising their statistics:
- HP: The character's hit points, which is the amount of damage the character can take in combat before being defeated.
- TP: The character's technique points, which is used for performing techniques.
- Speed: The character's turn priority in the battle order.
- Damage: Determines the damage done by physical attacks.
- Defense: Reduces the damage taken from enemy attacks.
- Intel: Determines the character's technique points.
- Stamina: Determines the character's hit points.
- Luck: Unknown effect.
- Skill: Unknown effect.
Enemy attacks can sometimes inflict a poison status effect on characters, which prevents them from being healed until the ailment is removed by an item or a technique (but otherwise has no ill effects).
Towns are safe zones without any random encounters that contain NPCs that provide the characters with hints on how to proceed. Towns include weapon, armor, and item shops and buildings where party members can rest to heal and save the game, where fallen allies can be revived, and where techniques can be rebalanced. The game ends if the entire party is defeated in battle and must be restarted from a previous save.
When out of battle, the player can invoke a menu with to view the status of any character, change the party order (members placed at the front of the party are more likely to be attacked), manage items, and use out-of-combat techniques (including healing and teleportation techniques).
Characters
The player's party can consist of as many as five characters.
First generation
Rhys (ケイン・サ・リーク) | |
---|---|
Race: Orakian | |
The young prince of the small Kingdom of Landen. After his wife-to-be is kidnapped by a dragon during the wedding day, Rhys escapes from his father's castle and starts an adventure that will eventually save their planet. He is a direct descendant of Orakio from the legend. He is physically powerful but cannot use any techniques. | |
Maia (マーリナ・ル・シール) | |
Race: Layan | |
Not playable. Maia is the amnesiac woman rescued by Rhys. The two eventually fell in love, but she is kidnapped during their wedding ceremony. It is later revealed that she is the princess of Layan Kingdom of Cille. She is one of the candidates for Rhys to marry at the end of the first scenario. | |
Mieu ( ミュー・タイプS2) | |
Race: Cyborg Techniques: Heal, Order | |
Mieu is a cyborg that once served Orakio. Rhys encounters her soon after starting his journey; Mieu, realizing that he is a descendant of Orakio, joins him, serving him and his descendants over the next years. Mieu is very fast. She is the only character who can equip claws and can use Heal and Order techniques. | |
Wren (シーレンTYPE386) | |
Race: Cyborg Techniques: Melee, Time | |
Wren is another cyborg that once fought under Orakio. Unlike Mieu, Wren is adept at ranged combat and can transform to different types of vehicles if the necessary parts are found. He also acts as a mechanic. He can use Melee and Time techniques. | |
Lyle (ライル・ラ・ミラー) | |
Race: Layan Techniques: Melee | |
Lyle is the prince of Shusoran, a Layan kingdom located in the Aquatica region. His reasons for joining Rhys and his true motives remain a mystery until the second generation. He can use Melee techniques. | |
Lena (リナ・ノ・サテラ) | |
Race: Orakian | |
The princess of the neighboring kingdom of Satera. Lena was supposed to be the wife of Rhys until the latter encountered Maia and fell in love with her. Despite this, Lena decides to help Rhys to find Maia and help her escape from the dungeon, and she later joins Rhys. She is one of the candidates for Rhys to marry at the end of the first scenario. She cannot use any techniques. |
Second generation
Ayn (アイン・ル・シール) | |
---|---|
Race: Orakian/Layan Techniques: Heal, Time | |
Ayn is the son of Rhys and Maia. After Cille and Shusoran come under attack by Cyborgs and his family is forced to flee, Ayn is tasked by his parents to find a safe refugee from the invasion. Being half-Layan on his mother's side, Ayn can use Heal and Time techniques and inherits his father's high physical stats. | |
Nial (レイン・サ・リーク) | |
Race: Orakian | |
Nial is the son of Rhys and Lena and prince of the now-united Kingdom of Landen-Satera. After their kingdom comes under attack by powerful monsters, his parents charge him to find who is responsible. Nial is comparable to Rhys: he cannot use techniques but has much higher physical stats than Ayn. | |
Thea (ラン・ラ・ミラー) | |
Race: Layan Techniques: Heal, Melee | |
Thea is the daughter of Lyle. She is the Princess of Shusoran. During the initial attack of Cyborgs, she gets kidnapped, and Lyle asks Ayn to find her. She is one of the candidates for Ayn to marry at the end of his scenario. While physically weak, Thea can use Heal and Melee techniques. | |
Sari (リン・ノ・サテラ) | |
Race: Orakian | |
Sari is the daughter of Lena and princess of the now-united kingdom of Landen-Satera. After deciding to fight against the cyborg invasion on her own, Sari joins Ayn's group and hands him over the Power Topaz after Ayn defeats her in combat. She is one of the candidates Ayn can marry at the end of his scenario. Being an Orakian, Sari cannot use any techniques but has very high physical stats, almost on par with Nial. | |
Ryan (ダン・カ・シウム) | |
Race: Layan Techniques: Time | |
Ryan is the leader of the Layan resistance. He is against the violent ways of Lune, who is responsible for the monster attack on Landen-Satera. Believing that Nial is in cahoots with Lune for rescuing Alair, Lune's sister, he tries to have them captured. He joins Nial's group after realizing that they are also opposing Lune. He uses staves as weapons and can use Time techniques. | |
Laya (ライア) | |
Race: Layan Techniques: Heal, Order | |
Laya is the younger sister of the Laya from the millennium-old legend. After being placed in suspended animation, she is awakened by Nial's group and joins the fight to stop Lune. She is not encountered during Ayn's scenario, but she can be recruited during Sean's and Crys' scenarios (in the third generation). She is one of the candidates for Nial to marry at the end of his scenario. Laya uses bows as weapons and can use Heal and Order based techniques. | |
Alair (ルイズ・ケイ・エシル) | |
Race: Layan | |
Not playable. Alair is the younger sister of Lune and she was once a commander for Laya's armies, only recently revived from suspended animation. Unlike her older brother, she believes co-existence with Orakians and promises to help Nial. She is one of the candidates for Nial to marry at the end of his scenario. |
Third generation
Sean (シイン・ル・シール) | |
---|---|
Race: Orakian/Layan Techniques: Heal, Melee, Time | |
Sean is the son of Ayn and Thea. After their home, the satellite Dahlia, was destroyed by the other satellite Alisa III and both of his parents are killed, Sean escapes to the planet surface to avenge his parents. Being three-quarters Layan, Sean can use Heal, Melee, and Time techniques. | |
Crys (ノイン・ノ・サテラ) | |
Race: Orakian/Layan Techniques: Time | |
Crys is the son of Ayn and Sari and the Prince of the Landen-Satera Kingdom. After a huge earthquake hits the kingdom, his parents send him to find out what happened. He can use Time techniques. | |
Adan (フイン・サ・リーク) | |
Race: Orakian/Layan Techniques: Heal | |
Prince of Landen-Satera Kingdom, Adan is the son of Nial and Laya and twin brother of Gwyn. After his sister is plagued by nightmares, he is tasked by his parents to team up with her and find out what is causing these dreams. Adan is half-Layan and can use Heal techniques. | |
Gwyn (ライア・サ・リーク) | |
Race: Orakian/Layan Techniques: Heal, Order | |
Princess of Landen-Satera Kingdom, Gwyn is the daughter of Nial and Laya and twin sister of Adan. After recurring nightmares of a catastrophe falling upon the world, she joins her older brother to find out what is threatening the planet. She can use Heal and Order techniques. | |
Aron (ルイン・サ・リーク) | |
Race: Orakian/Layan Techniques: Heal | |
Aron is the son of Nial and Alair and Prince of the Landen-Satera Kindgom. While living on the satellite Alisa III, his parents notice a satellite just like the one they are living on, only to see it blow up. Aron is tasked to find out what happened. | |
Kara (ルナ・ケイ・エシル) (Princess) | |
Race: Layan Techniques: Heal, Order | |
Kara is the daughter of Lune and niece of Alair. If Nial married Alair, she joins during the beginning of Aron's scenario and can also be recruited by Adan in his own scenario. This version of Kara has a lady-like attitude. She has low physical stats but can use Heal and Order techniques. | |
Kara (ルナ・ケイ・エシル) (Warrior) | |
Race: Layan Techniques: Melee | |
This is the other Kara from Sean and Crys' scenario. In this timeline, Kara's kingdom was destroyed. As a result, she is a much more aggressive and belligerent person. Disgusted by her father's weakness, she joins with either Sean or Crys. This version of Kara can only use Melee techniques but has much better physical stats. |

Techniques
The game has a unique technique system in which techniques are divided into four categories (Melee, Heal, Order, and Time) containing four techniques apiece.
Heal
These techniques cost 5 TP and can be used in or out of battle.
- Res: Restores hit points for a single ally.
- Gires: Restores hit points of all party members.
- Rever: Revives a fallen ally.
- Anti: Removes poison status on a single ally but does not always work.
Melee
These techniques cost 2 TP and can only be used during battle.
- Foi: Fire damage. Affects a single enemy but quite powerful.
- Zan: Wind damage. Affects enemies on either the back or front row of enemies.
- Gra: Gravity damage. Affects all enemies but weaker than other techniques.
- Tsu: Water damage. Affects enemies on either the left or right side of screen.
Time
These techniques cost 1 TP and can only be used during battle.
- Ner: Increases the speed of a single ally.
- Rimit: Increases the chance of escaping from battle.
- Shiza: Prevents a single enemy from using techniques but does not always work.
- Deban: Prevents a single enemy from attacking but does not always work.
Order
These techniques cost 1 TP and can only be used during battle.
- Fandi: Temporarily raises the attack power of a single ally.
- Forsa: Kills a single enemy but has a low chance of working (and does not work against bosses).
- Nasak: Kills the caster but heals every other party member.
- Shu: Temporarily raises the defense of a single ally.
Music and sound
The music for the game was composed by Izuho Numata (who would also compose Phantasy Star IV). It was her first time writing an original score for an RPG, having previously ported Ys: Ancient Ys Vanished Omen.
The main theme, its opening rendition also called "Aratanaru tabi e" (新たなる旅へ), was adapted by the S.S.T.Band as a rock ballad for live performances, and also featured on the album Hyper Drive. In his series teaching Mega Drive Fan readers about various aspects of video game music creators, Tohru "Master" Nakabayashi used the opening theme and its S.S.T.Band arrangement as an example of the differences between writing sheet music for Mega Drive music and band music.[18]
“ | At the time, I wanted to do sound for an RPG, so when I was assigned to work on P.SIII, I thought, "This is my lucky day!" even though it was going to be a lot of songs! When the designer, Mr. S, gave me a list of over 40 songs, I suddenly couldn't wrap my head around it. (Some of them did not make it into the game.) Then he told me to make it classical style, that's when my brain died. ...Well, there were many mountains to surpass so these songs could be made. I hope you will enjoy the world of P.SIII, which feels different from the bombastic drum-heavy P.SI and II. Even if you like just 1 song, that would make me happy. | „ |
— Izuho "Ippo" Numata in her commentary for the song "Aratanaru tabi e" |
The encounter music is dynamic and shifts depending on the course of the battle: triumphant when the player's party has the advantage, sinister when the enemy side is winning or when the party is ambushed, and neutral when the forces are balanced.
The overworld theme adds an instrument each time a new member joins the party.
“ | That was Mr. S, the director's idea. When he told me that he'd like the music to change, I thought, 'He has a fresh idea!' At the same time, I wondered how I should do it and deal with the sound data. Mr. S has a vast knowledge of music, so he had a clear idea how he wanted the music of Phantasy Star III to be and explained it to me. Since both of us loved classical music, it was easy for us to share ideas. At first, I was asked to have the music change depending on who was in the party, rather than the number of members. But there were problems, like there were too many types of characters who can join the party, and if all the characters have their own unique music, the game wouldn't work in the later stages as it took up too much memory, so we had to give up that idea. | „ |
There is also a special overworld theme that plays when the main character is defeated.
History
Development
The game was developed by a different team from Phantasy Star and Phantasy Star II since many members of the original team were working on the Mega Drive port of Sorcerian. Instead, many of its developers had previously worked on arcade-to-Mega Drive ports, such as Super Hang-On and Golden Axe. As such, it features a drastically different art style from the other games in the series.
Due to the crowded market for role-playing games at the time, the game features an ambitious branching narrative with multiple gameplay paths to set it apart. However, because of data storage limitations and time constraints, the final segments of the game vary relatively little, and the detail of the game's environments are sparse and the dialogue is minimal compared to the other entries in the series.
Legacy
The game has been re-released on numerous compilations. It was included in Sega Ages Phantasy Star Collection for the Sega Saturn in 1998, which adds the ability to increase the walking speed of the characters. It was released on Phantasy Star Collection for the Game Boy Advance in 2002, which rearranges the menus to fit the Game Boy Advance's screen. It was included in Sega Mega Drive Collection for the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable in 2006. It was included in Phantasy Star Complete Collection for the PlayStation 2 in 2008. This version adds graphical options as well as gameplay options to increase the walking speed or increase the amount of experience and meseta awarded from battles to reduce grinding. The game was included in Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2008, which includes an unlockable interview with producer Kazunari Tsukamoto. It was released for the Wii's Virtual Console in 2008. It was released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Steam as part of the Sega Mega Drive Classics collection in 2018. It was added to Phantasy Star Classics for Android and iOS in 2019.
