Sega Vintage Collection: Monster World, known in Japan as Monster World Collection (モンスターワールドコレクション), is a compilation of three Wonder Boy games for Xbox Live Arcade. It was released as part of the Sega Vintage Collection and Sega Ages Online series.

These games were released separately on the PlayStation Network service on the PlayStation 3 at about the same time.

Games included

• Wonder Boy in Monster Land (Monster World) (Sega System 2)
• Wonder Boy in Monster World (Wonder Boy V: Monster World III) (Sega Mega Drive)
• Monster World IV (Sega Mega Drive)

For some reason the collection omits Monster World II, otherwise known as Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap.

Gameplay

All of the games in the collection have a variety of additional features, such as the ability to save and load savestates, settings to change the display and use decorative wallpapers to fill the screen borders, and being able to save replays of the player's sessions to be played back later. The collection also include multiple regional versions of each game, and the player can freely choose which version they would like to play in the settings.

Also included is a Jukebox, which allows the player to listen to the music in each of the games. Songs are sorted by game and can be played continuously or shuffled. The player can also add songs to a custom playlist, and up to 100 songs can be added to the playlist at a time.

Wonder Boy in Monster Land has an extra control setting to map rapid wiggling of the joystick to a button, making it easier for the player to increase the amount of gold found in hidden spots.

Trials

Each of the Sega Vintage Collection/Sega Ages Online collections include "Trials", which challenge the player to complete specific objectives with special rules and aim for the best time or score they can. Completed runs can be uploaded to online leaderboards, and replays of the best runs can be downloaded and played back. The player cannot pause the game during a trial, and must stop the trial in order to access the Pause Menu.

Wonder Boy in Monster Land

	Gold Rush Challenge
	Target record: 1000 gold Time limit: 240 minutes
	"Collect all the gold you can! If you can't reach the end, you lose! Imagine you're in an arcade!" The objective of this trial is to complete the whole game and collect as much gold as possible using a single credit. The player will fail the trial if they die.
	Monster Castle Challenge
	Target record: 10 minutes Time limit: 30 minutes
	"Take on Monster Castle with the strongest equipment! Defeat the Dragon as quickly as you can! Use as much Medicine as you like!" The objective of this trial is to get through the Monster Castle and defeat the Dragon as quickly as possible. The player has the legendary equipment, 10 hearts of health, and infinite Medicine for this trial.
	Fireball Challenge
	Target record: 100,000 points Time limit: 240 minutes
	"Swap your sword for magic, and unleash an infinite flurry of fireballs! One hit and it's over in this Score Trial!" The objective of this trial is to go as far as possible and score as many points as possible. In this trial, the player cannot use a sword, but instead receives infinite Fireballs at the beginning. The trial ends if the player is hit even once.
	Sphinx Challenge
	Target record: 3 minutes Time limit: 10 minutes
	"The Sphinx is on the rampage! Defeat her as quickly as you can! She's too angry to bother with riddles!" The objective of this trial is to reach the Sphinx and defeat her as quickly as possible, however in this trial she will not present the player with a riddle and will immediately attack. The player has the Sword of Legend, Boots of Legend, 5 hearts of health, and infinite Medicine for this trial.

Wonder Boy in Monster World

	Evil King Challenge
	Target record: 20 minutes Time limit: 240 minutes
	"Time trial! Defeat the Evil King! Infinite Elixirs!" The objective of this trial is to reach the Evil King and defeat him as quickly as possible. The player has lots of equipment and spells, 13 hearts of health, and infinite Elixirs for this trial.
	Item Challenge
	Target record: 10 minutes Time limit: 60 minutes
	"Time trial! Find the Mermaid Tear! No elixirs!" The objective of this trial is to find the Mermaid Tear as quickly as possible. The player is equipped with the Trident, Steel Armor, Marine Boots, and 9 hearts of health. No Elixirs are available for this trial.
	Boss Parade
	Target record: 10 minutes Time limit: 120 minutes
	"Time trial! Defeat all four bosses! No elixirs!" The objective of this trial is to defeat all of the boss rematches in the final area as quickly as possible. The player is equipped with the legendary equipment and 14 hearts of health. No Elixirs are available for this trial.

Monster World IV

	Tower of Silence Challenge
	Target record: 20 minutes Time limit: 240 minutes
	"Time trial! Conquer the Tower of Silence! Infinite Elixirs!" The objective of this trial is to get through the Tower of Silence as quickly as possible, with the trial ending once the player retrieves the Magic Lamp. The player has a level 1 Pepelogoo, Asha's Sword, the Plain Shield, the Traveler's Armor, 11 Life Drops, and infinite Healing Medicines for this trial.
	Lava Cave Challenge
	Target record: 5 minutes Time limit: 60 minutes
	"Time trial! Pass through the burning Lava Cave! Infinite Elixirs!" The objective of this trial is to get through the last stretch of Handera Volcano and defeat the Flame Wizard as quickly as possible, with the trial ending once the player retrieves the Earth Spirit. The player has a level 1 Pepelogoo, Shah's Sword, the Flame Shield, the Warrior's Armor, three Herbs, 59 Life Drops, and infinite Healing Medicines for this trial.
	Underground Base Challenge
	Target record: 30 minutes Time limit: 240 minutes
	"Time trial! Conquer the Underground Base! Infinite Elixirs!" The objective of this trial is to get through the Underground Fort as quickly as possible, with the trial ending once the player reaches the long fall leading to the final boss. The player has a level 2 Pepelogoo, the Legendary Sword, the Plain Shield, the Traveler's Armor, four Herbs, 9 Life Drops, and infinite Healing Medicines for this trial.

History

This collection stands as the first time Monster World IV has been officially translated into English (though unofficial fan translations have already existed prior to the collection's release), but not the first official release in English speaking territories - the Japanese version of the game was previously released for the Gametap service. This translation was also released for the Wii's Virtual Console service 13 days prior to this collection.

It was also the first time the arcade version of Wonder Boy in Monster Land was released outside Japan (Europe received a Master System port and several home computer ports; North America received two computer ports). According to an interview with Westone's Ryuichi Nishizawa , the English Monster Land was a shelved release from 1987, while the English Monster World IV was made specifically for the Virtual Console release.
