Mega Drive was released in the first country on October 1992, and in the following years got to the other markets of that region.

Models were sold in the PAL system seen in Western Europe. In Bulgaria, Serbia, Montenegro and the CIS countries, Asian models in the PAL system were also released. This model was cheaper than the European versions.

Mega Drive has become a popular 16-bit console due to its lower price and better availability than Super Nintendo, not mention a possibility of play pirated games. Along with PlayStation, Game Boy and famiclones, Mega Drive became a symbol of video games of the 90s.

Based on its popularity, many clones were distributed in the region. Sega had to recognize some as official in order to have a certain percentage of profits from the sale of games and add-ons, such as Power Pegasus in Poland and Super Bitman in CIS countries.

In May 1996, Sega announced that it would support Mega Drive in the former communist countries, making the console available in some countries in 1999.
