Sega Consumer Research and Development Dept. #3 (Sega CS3) was a video game research and development division within Sega. As the name suggests, it was the third "consumer"-specific R&D department created by Sega of Japan. It was officially founded in April 1996 and headed by Yuji Naka.[1].
In May 1999, all of Sega's internal development divisions were renamed, with CS3 becoming Sega Software R&D Dept. 8.
On account of Yuji Naka and Naoto Oshima, the creators of Sonic the Hedgehog working for CS3, the group traded as Sonic Team (something R&D8 would continue).
