R&D Dept. #6 (第6研究開発部) was the sixth research and development lab within Sega in the late 80's. It was initially created to develop educational software for the Sega AI Computer.[1]
Following restructurings in either 1988 or 1989, R&D 6, now with staff previously from R&D 2, focused on bringing action games and sports games to the Mega Drive which would appeal to both Japanese and American audiences, in response to the console's popularity in the United States.[2] Most notably, it was responsible for the Mega Drive version of Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, and its developers would continue to work on its sequels QuackShot and World of Illusion.
As with most internal studios at the time, R&D #6 was not publicly credited for its efforts. The only game to reference "R&D 6" is 1989's Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf. Due to a large number of overlapping developers with confirmed games, other likely games developed by R&D 6 include ESWAT: City Under Siege, Streets of Rage and Pro Yakyuu Super League '91.
