RPG Production Dept. (RPG制作部) was a video game production division within Sega. As the name suggests, it was a department created by Sega Enterprises to produce role-playing games, a genre Sega was seen to have a weak presence in, partially relying on ports of PC games such as The Black Onyx, Ys: Ancient Ys Vanished Omen and Sorcerian,[2] and had begun to rectify with the Mega-CD games Seima Densetsu 3x3 Eyes and Dark Wizard .[3] It probably began life as the RPG Project, a section of Sega Consumer Software managed by Tomio Takami.[4] Under the name RPG Production Dept., It had officially been founded before April 1994 with Tatsuo Yamada as producer and director, managing alongside Sega Creative Center starting in April,[4] which also collaborated with other developers as part of the Mega RPG Project.[2]

Many developers involved with Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium, from Sega's long-running RPG franchise, and The Hybrid Front, a simulation game, were brought on to RPG Production, such as Yoshiaki Endo, Rieko Kodama and Yasushi Takeuchi.

It was merged with Sega CS2 immediately following the release of Magic Knight Rayearth,[5][6] with Dragon Force already a few months into production from many of its members.[7] At CS2, their RPG talents would be put to use in Sakura Taisen and, many years later, Skies of Arcadia.[8]
