Research and Development Dept. #1 (第一研究開発部) (often shortened to Sega R&D1) was, as its name suggests, the 1st R&D department within Sega, which developed the vast majority of its arcade titles in the 80's.
A recognizable team within R&D 1 was Team Shinobi (チームシノビ), initially named for its involvement with Shinobi, but it became more famously associated with Makoto Uchida, who created the team's later games Altered Beast, Golden Axe and Alien Storm.[1]
In either 1990 or 1991, R&D 1 was split into AM1 and AM3.[2]
