While in other companies, the role of "director" is akin to some sort of lead designer keeping a development team in order, in Sega's case, directors are often hired specifically with the task of managing people on the team, making sure the product matches up with the needs of the producer.

If the producer is taking a more back-seat role and the director is contributing more to the project, he or she is often referred to as a "planner", although the two terms are often interchangable. Planners are more of a Japanese-exclusive job title - outside of Japan (and possibly just Sega) they too would be known as directors.
