Naofumi Hataya (幡谷 尚史), also known by the alias Hata, is a Japanese musician and Sega of Japan composer known for his numerous contributions to the Sonic the Hedgehog series.

Hataya is married to fellow Sega of Japan composer Tomoko Sasaki.

Career

Hataya graduated from Rikkyo University, where he played in a band. Though he did not want a career in music, he was looking to improve his skills, and began seeking a job at a music-related company. In 1990, he took a job at Sega of Japan, and continues to create sound and music for games to this day.

Aliases

Hataya has been credited under the aliases Nao Chan, Hata, Hatabaw, Hata-bow, N.H, N. Hataya and Dr. Rachael.

Naofumi Hataya's music, which heavily relies on samples, takes influence from Black American culture and music, including the genres R&B, Soul, Funk and Hip hop.[8]
