Sega Research and Development Dept. #2 (Sega R&D2) was a video game research and development division within Sega. It was the first department established specifically to produce console games. It continued as Sega CS. During the 8-bit and early 16-bit eras of Sega consoles, the most memorable games for fans were the Alex Kidd games, the Phantasy Star games, as well as the first Shinobi game directly developed for a home console, The Revenge of Shinobi. Several well known Sega developers got their start here, who have increasingly gained more authority in the company later on.
